Warning: spoilers abound!
This movie was amazing! I loved it so much - it was just so much fun!
We’ve got America Chavez, a Latina who has the ability to travel the multiverse. Let’s hear it for the first Latina superhero of the MCU! Hooray! I’ve been waiting way too long for that.
And we’ve got the Scarlet Witch (aka Wanda, former Avenger) as a villain in this movie as she tries to chase down and steal America’s powers just so she can see her sons again. I’m just gonna say it. The Scarlet Witch is the best supervillain the MCU has ever had. She is genuinely terrifying. She kills the Illuminati (basically the Avengers of another universe) single-handedly and beats Doctor Strange several times. Literally the only reason she “lost” was because her kids from another universe were scared of her and she couldn’t handle that. Otherwise, she would’ve been unstoppable. And that is scary. Best villain ever.
Of course, there’s plenty of other things to rave about in this movie. There was a point where Doctor Strange and America fell through several universes and I definitely spotted a few spiderverses in there 👀 And my absolute favorite part of the movie: music in the magic. It was amazing!
Doctor Strange is fighting an evil Doctor Strange and they use musical notes as weapons. It is so cool. The soundtrack uses bold classical music to indicate the clashing of their magic/notes - I love it so much. Just the visual, the intermingling of sound, the whole intensity of the fight. So stunning!
Now that I’m done gushing, I do have one complaint. I spotted the queer pin on America’s jacket pretty early on so I was all 👀 But then they do a memory lane thing and show us that she had two moms. …ok, but that’s not the representation you think it is, Disney. Just because her parents are queer doesn’t mean she is. It doesn’t mean she’s not either, but with so little queer representation in the MCU, you need to make it perfectly clear. Your queer “representation” doesn’t count unless it’s explicitly one of the main characters, Disney.
So, that downer aside, I did absolutely love this movie. I’m excited to see America headlining her own movie eventually.
