Hello, there! Long time, no see. Since I’m still on winter break, I happen to have time to review this year’s Doctor Who special. Because school is around the corner, don’t expect any kind of consistency from me for the foreseeable future. I do have plans for this blog that I’ll hopefully be able to follow through on, but… figured I’d lower those expectations now lol.
Anyway, enough about me. On to the fangirl squeals in 3, 2, 1!
Warning: spoilers abound!
Omg, it has been way too long since I’ve seen the Doctor. Since I started this blog after the last season, none of you have any idea how much I love Doctor Who. Let’s fix that, shall we?
So, the special starts with a - flashback? summary?… whatever - it starts with a callback to the previous special in which the Doctor and her team fought a Dalek. What’s a Dalek? you ask. Only one of the Doctor’s worst enemies. Daleks are an alien species whose supreme goal is to Exterminate! Exterminate! Love to hate ‘em.
Anyway, in the flashback, we find the remains of the defeated Dalek was acquired by some scumbags who repurposed the Dalek armor to be security drones. Great job, humanity, stellar work. (Also, I could’ve sworn Daleks had already attacked Earth more than once at this point, so people maybe could have recognized a Dalek shell, but eh.)
After these first ten (?) minutes where we have yet to see the Doctor, we finally join her in a prison cell without her time machine… or her friends 😢 Which is where the last season ended, but I’m not going to get into why or how that happened. And she’s rescued by none other than Jack Harkness! Jack Harkness!!! You have to be a fan to understand why this is so awesome, so for those not in the know: he’s a badass. Now, if you’ll excuse me.
Jack Harkness is on the scene!!!! Jack Harkness is in the special and he’s rescuing the Doctor!!!!! OMG, OMG, OMG! AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
*ahem* Where were we? Oh, right, so rescue happens and the Doctor gets reunited with her friends on Earth in time to deal with humanity’s latest mess. I was expecting a happy, exciting moment from said friends, but instead I got a glum scene where they were mad or disappointed (?) that her time machine brought her to ten months after she dropped them off. Have to say, I am genuinely confused by their reaction. But that’s beside the point.
After the reunion, we jump right into the main plot of taking down Daleks. There’s a whole thing with Dalek clones being fed humans, so the Doctor tricks the original Daleks to wipe out the cloned ones. But who cares about the details? Jack Harkness gets to blow up a Dalek ship and it’s awesome!
Oh, but you know what’s more awesome? The Doctor tricks the Daleks off the ship into her other time machine that she just had lying around (again, explained from the last season) and programs it so that the machine would collapse onto the Daleks trapped inside! Exterminate! Exterminate! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!
…
Don’t judge me.
Now, with everything resolved, two of her friends and Jack split to stay on Earth, leaving future adventures for just the Doctor and the third friend (Yaz) who decided to keep tagging along. Also, it feels like they’re setting up a spin-off for the two that split, but we’ll see.
Hoping the next season of Doctor Who is just as good! 🤞🏻
