Let's Enjoy "Fear Street 1978"!

Warning: spoilers abound!

Hm. I’m not sure what to say here. I liked the movie. I loved the movie. But a lot of my praise for it would simply echo my last review. I’m also 85% sure I’ve actually read the book this particular movie is based since I “guessed” the twist near the end of who was telling the story. Either I’ve read the book or I’m just so familiar with Fear Street that I knew what to expect. Neither of which are a bad thing.

These movies so far have perfectly captured the essence of the Fear Street books and I expect the third part of this trilogy to do the same. I liked the mechanic of seeing this movie essentially via extended flashback. I usually like story within story styles which was well executed here.

A quick correction before I continue: I said that the Sheriff left a note for Deena’s (the main character’s) father saying, “It’s happening again.” I completely misread that situation because, honestly, those houses all look the same. The note was not left for the dad, but for C. Berman - the person telling Deena (and us) the story of the Camp Nightwing massacre in 1978. And within that story we learn that the Sheriff was there that night and is well aware of the witch’s curse on Shadyside. Which makes him more of a jerk for not believing Deena in the previous installment.

“Fear Street 1978” could definitely work as a standalone without the 1994 framework. But as a middle installment, this movie served a crucial purpose as a bridge to the next part. This story was so that Deena and her little brother Josh could know where to find the witch’s severed hand. (And apparently the Shadyside Mall was built on top of the old Camp Nightwing grounds - wtf?!)

With the 1978 story told and the hand located, the kids move to reunite the hand with the witch’s body that they had accidentally found in the previous movie. And as Deena does so, she is transported to the witch Sarah Fier’s viewpoint in 1666. Which means we’ll get to see the real story of what happened to Sarah Fier.

I’m looking forward to it.
