Warning: spoilers abound!
Scooby-dooby-doo, where are you? We’ve got some work to do now. 😁 In case you couldn’t tell, I really love Scooby-Doo and “Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island” is my all-time favorite Scooby movie. Probably because it deals with real monsters and not just people in masks.
This movie holds up surprisingly well. Like, I was half-expecting to be disappointed since I hadn’t seen it in a while, but it’s still a really good movie. Even the filler stuff flows well. The people who made this are really bad at showing the characters having crushes, though - it’s so amusingly awkward.
I love this movie so much. Loved how Velma and Fred would be so enthusiastically excited about possible logical explanations while Daphne’s insistent on it being supernatural. And, of course, Scooby and Shaggy were always the first ones to see some ghost activity - those poor chickens 😂
The zombies were always my favorite part of this movie with their sagging skin and vacant eyes being just the right amount of disturbing without being grotesque. I’m also delightfully impressed that there was barely any hint that the Scooby gang’s hosts on Moonscar Island, Lena and Ms. Lenoir, were actually the bad guy cat-creatures that they were. It’s one of those twists that doesn’t feel cheesy, forced, or obvious. It’s actually rewarding that the zombies were trying to help. I don’t think I saw it coming when I was a kid.
By the way, I also love the character design for the villains’ cat form. There’s nothing remotely cute about them. They’re just ferocious monsters that fully encompass the raw power of being feline. Perfection.
And another delight from re-watching this movie is that I forgot how much I loved the songs. It’s ter-rooor time again. In case you’re wondering, the band who sang these songs is called Skycycle, because yes.
I love the animation, the story, the score, everything about it and I’m so happy I enjoyed it now as much as I did when I was a kid. And I also realized I talk a lot like Shaggy 😂
10/10
