Warning: spoilers abound!
Well, I thought I had this movie. Turns out I do not own this movie on DVD nor is it on Netflix. But I’m gonna review it anyway - I don’t care that it’s been two years since I’ve seen it 😋
One of my favorite things about this movie is that it is so gay. Oh, sure, the alien symbiote named Venom and the human journalist Eddie don’t outright say they’re into each other and want to be together forever, but they’re totally in love and you can’t change my mind. Fight me. Also, yes, I am aware they’re a canon couple in the comics even if it’s not obvious in the movie. After I first saw this film, I bought all the current (at the time) Venom comics that very night and stayed up until three in the morning reading them.
Anyway, the movie itself, as a standalone, is absolute gold! It’s funny, it’s got a fun soundtrack, and it’s got the right amount of action to balance everything. The banter between Eddie and the symbiote is also super adorable.
Honestly my favorite part is when the SWAT team shows up at Eddie’s old workplace (I still have no idea why SWAT was even there - was there a deleted scene that explained that?). After they hear the SWAT members say, “Mask” and “Copy” to each other, then Eddie himself calls out “Mask” only for Venom to respond “Copy” and take over for the fight 💕 That was the moment those two truly bonded. Sure, they’d had a rocky start, but the overwhelming trust needed to do that, just… my heart.
And of course I loved the make out scene. I remember a bunch of people being upset that the kiss happened between Eddie and femme Venom, but I think that’s more a testament to the symbiote’s gender fluidity than anything else. It’s still gay.
Then at the end when they agree to only kill bad guys and the black goo peels away to show half of Eddie’s face and they say together, “We are Venom.” I loved that!
I loved this movie so much! Definitely looking forward to the sequel.
