Warning: spoilers abound!
I loved this movie! A small group of immortal warriors fight for what’s right? Awesome! And why are they immortal? No one knows! But who cares? This movie was fantastic!
So the premise of this movie is that someone, Copley, figured out these people are immortal and can heal from pretty much anything, including death. And they heal quickly too. Naturally Copley’s trying to sell them to a pharmaceutical CEO. Who are these immortals? There’s Andy, the boss (she’s awesome), who’s apparently ancient Greece old, Booker, and a gay couple Joe and Nicolo! I love that couple - they’re so casually adorable. An entire millennium together and they’re still totally in love with each other.
Then a new immortal pops up: Nile Freeman. There’s certainly a supernatural element in this since how they find each other is by dreaming of each other. Andy goes to find Nile and she joins the team. And you can guess where it goes from there.
The plot is fairly predictable and straightforward. Nothing wrong with that; it’s nice to have a story that’s easily digestible - especially when dealing with an action movie. The only real twist is that Booker turned out to be a traitor who was working with Copley the entire time. And Andy loses her immortality at some point. That wasn’t out of nowhere - they did do a good job of setting that up.
Anyway, after they kill the asshole CEO (naturally), the immortals get Copley to become their ally who will help them erase their tracks in this modern era of computers tracking everywhere we go. The final ending was a fantastic setup for a sequel with the sudden reappearance of an immortal who had been stuck at the bottom of the ocean for 500 years. Again, not out of nowhere. The movie had already weaved in some good backstory to set this up - I wouldn’t say it was done seamlessly, but that backstory scene certainly served its purpose.
Also, I love the fight choreography! The fighting styles of the characters were very… efficient. It was smooth, it was quick, it was effective. In a way, it was refreshing compared to how other action movies have done fight scenes. And the songs for those scenes were excellent choices to emphasize the tone.
The movie’s not perfect, but it’s still awesome. A diverse cast, a gay couple effortlessly in love, fantastic fight scenes, and a decent soundtrack. What’s not to love?
9/10
