Let's Enjoy "Lucifer" (Season One)!

Warning: spoilers abound!

I’ve heard good things about this show in the past and I was not disappointed. I loved it so much! The devil partnering up with a detective to solve murder in LA? Sold! Not gonna lie, I did not know what I was in for when I started, so I was pleasantly surprised with what I got. I’m a sucker for both crime shows and supernatural stuff, so I am most certainly a member of the target audience.

On that note, I actually really enjoyed the show’s take on Lucifer. Instead of him being naturally inclined to evil, he was ‘assigned’ to Hell (if I understood that correctly) in order to dish out the appropriate punishment. It was also a nice touch that Lucifer took issue with being constantly blamed for the sins of humans.

I also absolutely adored all the characters in this, especially Detective Chloe Decker, the devil’s partner in (solving) crime. When they first meet in the season, Lucifer discovers his charms, which tend to lean sexual in nature, don’t work on Chloe like they do on everyone else which means I’m headcanoning her as asexual. And what’s even more interesting is that we discover later on in the season that her presence makes Lucifer vulnerable - as in, he can and does get hurt when he’s around her. I’m assuming this will get explained in later seasons as it wasn’t really resolved here. So naturally this means being asexual makes you a living weapon against the devil. What? It’s my interpretation and you can’t stop me! I am ALL POWERFUL! MWAHAHAHAHA!

…Anyway, the overall plot was fairly predictable to me, especially the subplot of who was the dirty cop on Chloe’s team and blah blah blah. Though, with these kinds of shows, you’re in it for the individual episodes, not the overarching plot, so can’t really complain too much. And that’s really felt when any issues surrounding Lucifer are typically resolved within a couple of episodes. Like, at one point, Lucifer’s wings were stolen and I was expecting that to last several episodes but he recovered them in the very next episode and burned them. There were only two consistent plot points in this whole season: Chloe dealing with the possibility of a dirty cop and an angel trying to get Lucifer to return to hell.

[this next section gets kind of religious; feel free to skip if you’d like]

Speaking of the Lucifer back to hell thing, I found it a little odd how many parallels Lucifer’s backstory had to Jesus’ story. Seriously, as someone who was Catholic-raised, there were a lot of recognizable elements from what I know of Jesus being applied to Lucifer. It was slight, it was subtle, and I’m sure not everyone would’ve picked up on it, but it was still pretty jarring to me. And you wanna know something even weirder? In the episode where Lucifer was searching for his wings, there was a point he was reading off a list of items for sale at a black market auction. Among the angel wings, there was also the teeth of saints (which, by the way, is a real thing the Catholic church collects), and a piece of the cross. But when Lucifer read off the “piece of the cross” item, he made it sound like it was the most ridiculous thing ever. Which was so bizarre to me. Because with references to the Bible and saints plus the interpretations being presented, everything on screen was all very Christian, yet we’re acting like Jesus isn’t important to the story.

Honestly, I find it odd how many shows out there are built around Christian imagery only to completely ignore Jesus, anyway. It’s just so weird how creators will blatantly ignore the central pillar of the faith they’re ripping off. And I’m not offended by them doing that (I mean, the very concept of this show would be offensive if I cared enough), I just find the lack of basic acknowledgment to Jesus… strange.

[religious stuff ends here]

I’m definitely looking forward to watching season two of this show. The way season one ended, with us finding out someone escaped hell and, not only is that someone Lucifer’s mom, but Lucifer is scared?! Yeah, of course, I’m going to watch it. I’m assuming his mother is Lillith, mother of demons, but we’ll see.

8/10
