Warning: spoilers abound!
Ok, I was originally going to space this out with a movie between season reviews, but things happened and I didn’t have time, but I’d already finished watching the second season. So, might as well do a whole series of blog posts until I’m all caught up with the show (though there might be some really long gaps between reviews).
Last season, we found out that Lucifer’s mother escaped from Hell. I was… dead wrong about who she was. Turns out she’s the goddess of all creation/God’s ex-wife, which is an interesting choice considering it’s a huge departure from the Christian imagery that inspired this show. The entire season is about following her shenanigans to get back to Heaven and the consequences of her actions. It was a very compelling plot and I did enjoy how Lucifer resolved everything in the end by sending his mother into a new universe - there was a whole thing with a mystical flaming sword and blah blah blah, but whatever, I don’t watch the show for the plot.
So, in the first season, there were hints of Lucifer and Detective Chloe having romantic interest in each other and they really played that up this season. Gotta say, I was really on the fence with this ship for a while. The whole first season of “romantic chemistry” felt forced and the first part of the second season felt like they were pushing for the ship than allowing it to happen naturally. But once Lucifer started showing genuine affection and they kissed I… was totally on board.
By the way, this season, we learned why Chloe makes Lucifer vulnerable. Apparently, Amenadiel, an angel now on Earth (did I mention him last review? I don’t remember), had blessed a couple a long time ago, resulting in Chloe being conceived. And that reveal later devastates Lucifer because his conclusion is that Chloe’s affections for him aren’t real since her being born was part of God’s plan. I honestly don’t understand at all where he’s coming from in that conclusion. But it leads to Lucifer breaking things off before anything starts, so we’re back to square one. And since I’m officially on board the Lucifer x Chloe ship, this stalling sucks!
But that’s enough of that. This season, we get a new character, a forensic scientist named Ella Lopez. I love her so much! She’s fun and nerdy, has a gruesome sense of honor, AND she’s a hugger. Ella is by far my favorite character in the show. The show’s already pretty funny, but Ella brings in a much more light-hearted element to the table.
So, yeah, that’s pretty much it for season two review. No, wait! The cliffhanger of the season is that Lucifer gets kidnapped right after he leaves a voicemail for Chloe telling her he wants to tell her the truth about who he is (basically, he wants to show her his true face - he doesn’t hide the fact he’s the devil, in fact he brags about it, but Chloe’s never believed him). And, after being dumped in the desert, we found out Lucifer’s wings grew back! …Did I mention he’d had his wings cut off before the first season started? Eh, whatever.
But, yeah, that cliffhanger definitely works because we have to find out how and why Lucifer got his wings back. Also, not gonna lie, I… kind of already watched most of season three at the time of writing this. I won’t say anything right now, but… Nope, never mind, I’ll save it for next week.
