Warning: spoilers abound!
This… was not a good season. It was just so ugh! Like, we ended last season on a cliffhanger of Lucifer kidnapped and abandoned in the desert with his wings grown back. But we don’t get an (official) answer as to why his wings grew back until much later in the season and that answer is so… boring (angels’ appearances change based on how they subconsciously view themselves).
And the plot this season is particularly lackluster. Yes, I know I said I don’t really care about the plot in past reviews, but this time it bothered me. Like, ok, we find out who kidnapped Lucifer pretty early on: a mysterious badass criminal known as the Sinnerman so that’s the big mystery that will carry the season, right? No. No it was not. This Sinnerman dude is found and arrested only 9 episodes in to a 26-episode season (and that’s after an unnecessary amount of filler) only for Lucifer/the audience to discover the person really behind the Sinnerman is the new lieutenant of the precinct Marcus Pierce. Oh, and guess what? Marcus Pierce is actually Cain, as in Cain and Abel (google it if you don’t know that story).
Before I continue complaining, a few things: 1) I legit did not see the Cain twist coming, so that was awesome, 2) From the very beginning, I didn’t trust this Lieutenant Pierce character and knew he would be involved with the Sinnerman somehow - I think this sense of mistrust was intentional, so compliments to the show for that, 3) I totally shipped Lucifer and Lieutenant Pierce the whole time because I swear they were flirting in the first episode (this has nothing to do with anything, I just wanted to put it out there).
Anyway, after the whole Cain reveal, we find out the reason he’s in LA is because he wants to end his immortal existence and, based on his observations of Lucifer and Detective Chloe, thinks he has a shot at that by being near Chloe. Ok, so finding a way to kill Cain aka Lieutenant Pierce will be the driving force of the rest of the season, right? Nope! I mean, it sort of was, and then it wasn’t, so I was just UGH!
There was just so much waffling in this season in terms of plot. You’d think things were going in one direction only for the show to step right back to point zero. And it’s like, move on already! Pick. A. Plot. Point. And. Move. Forward!
I feel like I wouldn’t have minded so much if there hadn’t been so many filler episodes. I swear, nearly half the season were just boring filler to waste time instead of, you know, moving forward. Even the last two episodes were filler! I cannot emphasize enough how upsetting that was! Episode 24, we get Lucifer finally killing Cain/Lieutenant Pierce and Chloe finally, finally(!), sees Lucifer’s true face. (Or his “devil face” as he calls it, but that term will never not sound ridiculous to me). And then episodes 25 and 26 are just fillers with absolutely no follow up of the events of the real season finale in episode 24! Who does that? Who! Does! That?!
And that’s not even getting into how boring the subplots were either. There’s a whole love triangle thing going on with side characters and instead of getting invested in the drama, I’m sitting there wondering why they don’t go into a polyamorous relationship. Just saying, the characters I’m talking about seem like they’d be into the idea.
Despite the awkward cringe generated this season (with a nice dose of casual ableism to spice things up), there was one part of the season that I absolutely adored. And that was the death of Charlotte Richards. This character was a lawyer whose body housed the goddess of creation in season two while her soul was in hell, so her character arc was about being a good person and dealing with the trauma of hell. And the show actually did do a solid job of making me get attached to her. Charlotte’s death scene (murder, really) was absolutely beautiful.
She protects the angel turned mortal Amenadiel from getting shot as a reflex. And as Amenadiel comforts her, with a gorgeous song being played through the scene, his wings grow back so he can fly her to heaven. I love death scenes so much and this was 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Not the best season of “Lucifer”, that’s for sure. Very cringy, very awkward, very… stuck. But with a few gems like Charlotte’s death thrown in there, not a total loss.
5/10
