I sat on Leslie’s couch with my arms crossed, my leg stretched out onto the low table in front. Two officers stood across from me, asking me questions I’d already answered a thousand times, while Leslie sat beside me.
“And just one last time,” one of the officers said, “we’d like to ask – ”
“I already told you everything,” I snapped. “I’ve never seen him before, I don’t know him and he attacked me because I’m a former byte. He told me himself.”
The officers shared a glance. “Miss,” the other one said, “we understand this is frustrating, but we want to make sure all our details are correct.”
I rolled my eyes. “If this was the System, he would’ve been executed already.”
“Dax,” Leslie said.
“What?!”
Leslie frowned at me, then looked to the two officers standing in their living room. “I think ytjoiefmndsjurjiefmsh for today,” they said as they stood up from the couch.
“We really need to be certain,” one of the officers protested as they were led to the door.
“She’s been through ten different interviews,” Leslie responded. “Ietheifdsnave what you need.”
Leslie shut the door behind the two officers as they left.
“He’s wanted for plenty of other crimes,” Leslie stated as they returned to the couch. “So he’ll be away for a while even if nothing comes of this.”
I huffed. “I have no idea what you mean by that. But as long as I don’t have to answer one more of the same damn question, I’m happy.”
Leslie paused. “Is it alright if I ask you why you didn’t say anything before?”
I glanced over at them. Their expression was completely blank. I looked away, leaning my head onto the back of the couch to stare up at the ceiling.
“I wasn’t sure,” I said. “He was really good at hiding, so I wasn’t certain it wasn’t just all in my head.”
Leslie laughed. I lifted my head up from the couch to look at them. They didn’t actually think that was funny did they?
“That’s all?” they asked, a relieved grin spreading across their face. “Did you think people wouldn’t believe you?”
“Well, no, that wasn’t it. I… just wanted to be sure.”
Leslie sighed. They wrapped their arms around me, careful not to disturb the wound on my upper arm. Leslie placed their forehead on my uninjured shoulder.
“You keep scaring me,” they said. “Is nearly dying a habit of yours?”
“Sorry,” I replied. “I’ll try to stop doing that.”
Leslie chuckled. When they looked up, our noses were nearly touching.
“Leslie,” I began, “there’s been… something I’ve been wanting to say for a while now.”
“Yeah?” they replied, their hand brushing my cheek.
“You’re a very special person to me.”
“Mm-hmm.” They leaned closer.
“And I would like us to be something other than friends,” I whispered.
Leslie’s lips met mine. My arms wrapped around their neck as they kissed me. When we parted, Leslie smiled while gazing into my eyes. They whispered back, “I feel the same.”
